Have you ever felt like your major just wasn’t doing it for you? Are you considering changing your major or changing your career path? Well, you are not alone. Many college students start their undergraduate studies undecided or change their major at least once. As you continue to explore your career path, UIC offers many resources to guide you to your major.

Mayra Sanchez is the Lead Academic Advisor for the Business Scholars program at UIC. Mayra has 8 years of experience working with UIC Business students, helping them find the perfect majors and career paths. She shared advice with UIClife for undergraduate students who are searching for the right major.

Where do I even start?
When trying to figure out what field is best for you, Mayra said, “Make sure to research and talk with peers, alumni, faculty, staff, and professionals in that industry.” Leveraging your own skills is a great way to figure out what career path you are best suited for. Mayra also added, “Think about your strengths, weaknesses, and interests”. Tapping into your personal hobbies is a valuable tool for finding a major that will get you interested and turn you into a life-long learner.

What if I want to add/change a major?
No need to worry! It's not uncommon for college students to change their major at least once. “Make sure to connect with your Academic Advisor to discuss adding or changing a major” said Mayra. Your Academic Advisors are here to help! Don't hesitate to set up an appointment when the confusion hits.

How can I gain experience in my field?
Finding work experience is usually one of the biggest stressors that students face after choosing a major. Mayra suggested, “Visit the career center and learn about the different career paths and certifications available with your major”. Certifications are fantastic for building your resume and gaining industry knowledge. Mayra also mentioned, “Internships are a great way to get real hands-on experiences and will provide you with an understanding of the profession”. Utilizing the services offered by Career Services can help you land the perfect internship and give you the real-life experience needed to succeed!
