Embark on a Life-Changing Journey: Study Abroad programs at UIC

UIC offers an array of study abroad programs, inviting students to explore the world, broaden their perspectives, forge lifelong connections, and create enduring memories. With over 300 programs to choose from, UIC presents an exciting opportunity for personal growth and academic enrichment. Take a look at the study abroad experience, and discover insights into program availability, benefits, and real student perspectives.

Need a guide for understanding the selection process while addressing some concerns? Colleen Gray, Assistant Director of the UIC Study Abroad Office, suggested that “students who are even a tiny bit curious about studying abroad should make an appointment with an advisor to have an open and honest conversation about their options.” Another way to get more information is to attend the Study Abroad Fair on Sept. 14.

Study abroad advisors guide students through the selection process, ensuring they find the perfect fit for their academic and personal goals. There are three types of programs available: partnership, exchange, and faculty-directed. Partnership programs offer immersive experiences with partner universities worldwide, while exchange programs allow students to directly enroll in classes at a partner university while paying UIC tuition and fees. Faculty-directed programs, led by UIC faculty, provide unique short-term opportunities for a more intimate study abroad experience. Mark your calendar for the Expo in November.

Colleen said, “Every student should be able to study abroad, whether it is a short-term program or a semester." If you are currently enrolled and need more guidance, attend the upcoming info session during Weeks of Welcome. When ready, explore programs based on interests and other criteria using the search tool.

After reviewing the options, consider the benefits. There are many benefits to studying abroad while in college.  Personal benefits include:

⦁ Increasing self-confidence
⦁ Developing intercultural competence
⦁ Making new friends and contacts
⦁ Providing direction or clarity to your goals
⦁ Discovering new interests and passions
⦁ Seeing the world

During the Spring 2023 semester, a group of UIC students chose to study abroad in London. A few decided to share their experiences:

Kaustubha Medikundam (Junior, CS Major)
Kaustubha seized the opportunity to study abroad and explore the world while furthering a computer science education. The journey evolved into a personal transformation toward becoming more independent. The most significant takeaway? Learning to live life authentically and unapologetically.

Advice:
As long as you are open to trying new things and letting yourself enjoy life, it is an unforgettable period of your life.

Alicia Fabella (Junior, Marketing Major)
Studying abroad in London was a dream come true for Alicia, she was incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to pursue the experience last spring. The journey allowed her to expand her horizons and cultivate a deeper understanding of the world. The program facilitated excursions throughout the United Kingdom including Oxford, the historic King's College Chapel in Cambridge, and Roman remains in Bath and Wales.

Advice:
I encourage anyone who can study abroad to take advantage of it. Push your boundaries and you can attain stronger self reliance and independence. Along the way, you can make lifelong relationships from around the world.

Professional benefits of studying abroad include:
⦁ Developing transferable/soft skills such as leadership, communication, and comfort with ambiguity
⦁ Expanding your professional network
⦁ Gaining real-world work experience from an international internship or research project
⦁ Standing out among your peers – only 10% of U.S. undergraduates study abroad

When students return from a trip, success can take many forms. After going to Brazil during spring break 2023, education major Aaron Stanaway started working in the Study Abroad office. He is now a student ambassador and program assistant for the First-Year Flames Abroad program with its location in Costa Rica. He is currently a peer-advisor for the program and meets with students to provide tips and tricks on how to travel.

Alyssa Mei (Junior, Finance Major)
Alyssa also pursued studying abroad in London with the added benefit of an internship opportunity. The internship with a Fintech company solidified her career aspirations, providing hands-on experience and a network of industry professionals. She was able to learn invaluable time management and budgeting skills while exploring Europe, building new friendships, and adapting to a different culture contributed to her personal growth.

Advice:
It is a great opportunity for you to expand your knowledge and horizons. It gives you skills and teaches you to be open-minded.
