Safely Getting Around Campus
Students are encouraged to step out of the classroom, broaden their horizons, and build connections. Whether newcomers to Chicago or seeking guidance on campus navigation, it is important to prioritize security and safety. UIC is committed to empowering students to safely get around campus. Examine some of the available tools from University Police.
UIC SAFE App for Personal Security
UIC students have access to the UIC SAFE app, a free personal security tool designed to keep them informed and connected. With a real-time information bar at the top, students get updates and safety notifications. “Be informed of gas leaks, police emergencies and more. Students can even access a panic button, like a portable Startel.” says Officer Cesar Canizales of the Community Engagement Unit. The panic button provides direct contact with dispatchers and first responders during emergencies. Students can easily share their location with friends and family. The app also offers access to reporting forms, emergency guidelines, and a comprehensive list of support resources.
Download the UIC SAFE app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android).
Friend Virtual Walk for Added Security
Students never have to walk alone. Invite friends or family members on virtual walks within the UIC SAFE app. For added security, share GPS location with the touch of a button.
Tip: Enable Location Services on your phone.
Walking Safety Escort for Nighttime Travel
Traveling alone after dark can be risky. Officer Canizales advises “Students returning from a late-night party may not feel safe, and their virtual contact may not be available. The free Walking Safety Escort service provides trained Student Patrol officers under the supervision of the UIC Police Department to accompany students.” To schedule a Walking Safety Escort, call (312) 996-2830.
Tip: Request an escort 10 to 15 minutes in advance for improved service.
Emergency Call Boxes and Blue Light Poles for Immediate Assistance
Easily identifiable 8-foot blue light poles are available for swift assistance. The red call button activates an alarm and immediately connects to the UIC Police. Poles equipped with cameras allow the UIC Police Department to monitor students' general direction.
Tip: Feeling threatened? Don’t wait! Keep walking and press the next light pole along the way.
Night Ride for Safe Campus Transit
Officer Canizales describes Night Ride as “the university’s personal Lyft/Uber system.” For students who prefer not to walk at night, UIC Night Ride is a safe and convenient option to travel within campus boundaries from 11:00PM - 7:00AM, seven days a week. Students should create a TransLoc account for on-demand requests and real-time tracking. To request a Night Ride, call (312) 996-6800 or email rides@uic.edu. A valid UIC i-card is required.
Tip: Be aware of the coverage area and call 20 minutes in advance whenever possible.
Paratransit & ADA Services for Inclusive Transportation
UIC ensures inclusive transportation for all students through its Paratransit services and ADA-compliant intracampus bus routes. Students can get to class on time, reliably navigate winter weather, and enjoy overall barrier-free travel. Request paratransit services by calling (312) 996-2842 from 7:00 AM - 11:00 PM, and (312) 996-6800 from 11:00 PM - 11:00 AM.
Tip: Sharing your schedule in advance allows drivers to accommodate your needs effectively, and is a great way to make a new friend.
Bonus Option: Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Bus and Blue Line
The Blue Line and CTA buses are widely used by students, offering reliable transportation options beyond the campus. Students should familiarize themselves with the bus numbers and routes offered by the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA). "Before commuting, download a tracker and check for emergency shutdowns or delays," advises Officer Canizales.
Tip: Trackers offer the added benefit of waiting indoors during inclement weather until transportation arrives.

As students attend special events, socialize with friends, and expand their college experience, they can prioritize safely navigating campus. The UIC Office of Preparedness and Response provides these and other valuable safety tools to boost the confidence and independence necessary for an enjoyable journey throughout college.
