Interested in knowing more about the sports clubs at UIC?

With a diverse array of options, students can find their niche and build lasting connections while honing their skills. Whether playing competitively or to learn new sports, the UIC Campus Recreation Sports Club Program provides in-depth opportunities to enhance life on campus. Read on to learn more about a few sports clubs.

Fencing Club

The Fencing Club at UIC aims to create an inclusive and supportive atmosphere for fencers of all levels. President Katy Amodeo says the club’s mission is to introduce and cultivate the art of fencing while nurturing the athletic growth of its members. With access to the three main fencing weapons–foil, épée, and saber–the club encourages its members to explore and enjoy the diverse facets of the sport. Open to all, regular practice sessions are hosted on Mondays and Wednesdays 5 - 7 pm at the SRF MAC suite.

The club had its first tournament of the semester at NIU on November 18. The occasional exhibitions with other universities add a competitive edge to its activities. Katy also mentions the highly anticipated in-house tournament at the end of each semester saying, “The tournaments are always super fun and give everyone the opportunity to test out their skills and try different weapons.” Looking ahead, the club anticipates organizing more events during spring semester to enrich the fencing experience for its members.

Taekwondo Club

UIC’s Taekwondo Club cultivates a strong, united community through dedicated Taekwondo practice. Members motivate each other to become stronger by promoting physical wellness and longevity. Their approach aims to excel in all levels of Taekwondo, emphasizing personal growth through leadership development, team building, and mindfulness. Co-President Monica Padilla says, “We are committed to creating an inclusive and supportive environment where our members inspire one another to grow stronger, not only in their Taekwondo journey, but also in life as a whole.” Benefits of membership include learning self-defense, improving fitness and discipline, and access to a supportive community.

The club focuses on recreational aspects, but also aims to attend at least two local tournaments each semester, alongside hosting joint events and seminars with other Illinois universities. Recently, they hosted the Midwest Collegiate Taekwondo Conference, engaging in six hours of intensive sparring and poomsae training with participants across the Midwest, utilizing electronic scoring for the first time! Monica also mentions an experience partnering with Taekwondo clubs at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign and Northwestern for a four hour sparring event. Afterwards, all participating members shared a meal together, strengthening and creating lasting connections. These collaborations foster strong ties with other universities, promising enriching future endeavors for the club.

Competitive Gaming

The Competitive Gaming Club’s objective is to build a diverse, growing gaming community where students of all backgrounds can unite and engage through video games. The club also offers casual events and programs, supporting both modes of play. Regardless of being on a collegiate competitive team or not, the club is open to all via the discord server, which is the largest at UIC!

President Kwan Byll elaborates further saying, “My favorite events are those we have in collaboration with Red Bull. I already love their drinks, but being able to have our teams showcase their talent in-person and compete on stage in front of a live crowd is such a surreal experience.” The club is part of the national governing body GGLeagues and Riot Games. For those who want to compete against other universities and teams, collegiate gaming tournaments include popular games like VALORANT, Rainbow Six Siege, Overwatch, League of Legends, and CS:GO.. Links to the events are available via the discord server.
