Play, Compete, Belong: Sports Clubs

For those looking to stay active and committed to New Year's resolutions, UIC Recreation and Wellbeing Sports Clubs provide the perfect opportunity. Whether competing at a high level or trying a new sport, there’s something for everyone. With 29 student-led sports clubs, students can find a community that aligns with their interests and goals.
Men’s Rugby
The UIC Men’s Rugby Club is more than a team; it's a brotherhood built on teamwork, resilience, and camaraderie. Players push their limits through intense training while developing communication, leadership, and adaptability. On and off the field, teammates support one another, forming lifelong bonds. No prior experience is required, joining is as simple as attending practice. The club welcomes anyone committed to learning, fostering growth, friendships, and physical fitness. Competing against schools like Loyola, Northwestern, NIU, and DePaul, the team has three confirmed spring tournaments and scrimmages for 2025. For many, the most memorable part isn’t just competition but the welcoming atmosphere. Club president Jonathan Patlan recalls, “Everyone was so welcoming and talked to me immediately to get to know me better. I was already building a close bond just by attending the first practice.” With a new semester underway, the club looks forward to welcoming new members, strengthening the squad, and competing together. Men’s Lacrosse
The UIC Men’s Lacrosse Club is not just about competition, it's a welcoming community where players of all skill levels can connect, improve, and build lasting friendships. With no tryouts or cuts, anyone can join, whether competing in scrimmages and league games or just attending practices. The team stays connected via GroupMe for updates on practices, games, and field availability. A standout moment for the team came after their first game last semester. Though they didn’t win, the post game experience was unforgettable. The Club president Dylan Bolanos says “My favorite memory was after the game when we all went to McDonald’s. Despite the loss, morale was high, and we were just excited to play again.” That camaraderie is what makes the club special. For those who may not make the official roster, open training sessions provide opportunities to develop skills and stay engaged. Competing under the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) in the Western Conference, the team typically faces other collegiate squads, though this spring will focus on friendlies in and around Chicago. As the season approaches, the team is eager to return to the field, compete, and continue growing together. Competing under NIRSA in the Western Conference, the team typically faces collegiate opponents, though this semester will focus on friendlies around Chicago. Many players highlight travel as a key experience.
