Preparing For Summer Session

Summer session at UIC

Summer courses are a great way to stay on track or graduate early. UIC offers a 4-week session and an 8-week session for the summer. These sessions are “special because they provide students a lot more flexibility to combine a course or two with other activities like a job, internships, or travel,” according to Natalie Kokorudz, Associate Director of UIC Summer Session. Here is how to do well and stay on track during the summer.

Keep track of deadlines and set obtainable goals
At the start of the Summer Session, take note of key dates like registration, deadlines, and finals week. “Schedule time to study and work on assignments daily, especially if you enroll in a 4-week session course,” suggests Natalie. Review each syllabus and jot down the important dates and deadlines in a planner. Next, set long-term and short-term goals and ask yourself what you want to achieve or how to divide your workload. These guiding questions are a great way to motivate you to get work done. Ensure your goals are manageable so you can check them off each week and feel accomplished as you complete the term.

Prioritize and organize
Be realistic about how much you take on. As summer courses are condensed, consider how many you can handle. To tackle assignments, categorize them by due dates and importance. Overcoming hurdles early on paves the way for the rest of the term. However, do not forget lower-priority assignments. When faced with important tasks and competing deadlines, consider how much time is needed to complete each task and your ability to work on them. Streamline the study process by consolidating your notes and organizing your workspace.

Ask for help and take advantage of resources
Seek help if you feel overwhelmed or have fallen behind. Connect with your instructors. Going to office hours is a great way to get additional clarification on specific topics. UIC has plenty of resources to help you succeed. Take advantage of Tutoring Services, which continue throughout the summer. You can even search by subject. College advisors, the Counseling Center, and the Wellness Center are all available to students throughout the summer. Asking for help is an excellent way to save time, maximize resources, and set yourself up for success.

Make new friends and form study groups
Meet new people and broaden your social circle in the summer. Form study groups to review class materials, clarify specific topics, and provide outside views for discussions and assignments. Study groups create a supportive environment to achieve your goals. Building a support system is also beneficial if you struggle to focus while working alone. Use this time to form new connections, collaborate with others, and achieve academic success.

Pace yourself and take breaks
While attending Summer session, take plenty of breaks to soak up some summer fun. Since fewer students are around in the summer, the campus atmosphere is more relaxed. Try studying outside or taking a break to enjoy the warm weather. Go on a walk, hang with your friends, or stay home and recharge. Make sure to take some time off to avoid burnout. Taking breaks can make you more productive in the long run.

Reward yourself and acknowledge how far you’ve come
Acknowledge your accomplishments when you finish an assignment. Reflect on your progress and use it to motivate you to finish strong. Reward yourself with meaningful activities that help you maintain your motivation, like taking the day off, treating yourself to a meal, or buying something you have wanted for a while. Rewarding yourself ensures you have something to look forward to once you finish your tasks.
