Study Abroad: The London Experience 🇬🇧

Student crossing the famous Abbey Road in London

Studying abroad in London was a dream come true for me, and I was incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to pursue this experience last spring. The journey expanded my horizons and cultivated a deeper understanding of the world. I am thrilled to share my three most cherished aspects of my time abroad in London, along with some invaluable tips on optimizing your study abroad experience.

Academic and Professional Experience
London, a city with a population of over 8 million people, is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world. From the iconic Big Ben to Buckingham Palace, the city has a rich history dating back to Roman times. Its academic standards are highly regarded, with many of its universities ranking among the top in the world.

As a marketing student, I was thrilled to embark on a study abroad program in such a vibrant city. The courses were tailored to my major and provided a diverse educational experience. Knowledgeable and passionate professors guided me through the curriculum, while interactive and engaging lectures gave me a deeper understanding of the subject matter.

I was fortunate to engage with a real-time client in one of my courses. I was able to apply theoretical knowledge from class to a practical setting. I also developed a deeper understanding of Digital Marketing and Strategy.

I had the chance to witness how internships positively impact a student's career path. One of my closest friends, Alyssa Mei, was able to take part in an internship program through UIC while abroad. The program paired her with a Fintech company that aligned with her major in Finance and provided her with a structured internship timetable. She gained hands-on experience and was fully immersed in the financial district of Canary Wharf.

Alyssa shared that the internship program was a turning point for her. She appreciated the opportunity to network with professionals in the industry and learn from their experiences. Overall, the internship program helped Alyssa build her resume and gain the confidence and skills needed to pursue a successful career in Finance.

Cultural Immersion
One of the most remarkable aspects of my study abroad journey was the chance to submerge myself in the rich cultural tapestry of British society. Being situated in Central London, I could conveniently explore the diverse boroughs of this great city. I enjoyed touring the trendy neighborhood of Shoreditch, where I indulged in the local street art scene. I also made my way to the charming borough of Greenwich, where I marveled at the iconic Greenwich Observatory and visited the famous Greenwich Market.

My study abroad program facilitated excursions throughout the United Kingdom. We visited Oxford University, where I was struck by the stunning architecture of the university buildings and was instantly transported to Hogwarts in New College. I visited the historic King's College Chapel in Cambridge, which left me in awe of its intricate Gothic design. I enjoyed fish’n chips by the seaside in Brighton, basked in the Roman remains in Bath and Wales, and enjoyed Afternoon Tea with my program.

I also had the chance to experience the culture of London. I indulged in the vibrant museum scene during my leisure time and attended the Coronation of King Charles III, a once-in-a-lifetime experience. One of my most cherished memories was forging relationships and connections with the locals through daily interactions. Whether through the tube (mind the gap), at a cheeky pub, or via classmates, this immersive experience fostered a deeper understanding and appreciation of the customs and traditions that comprise the cultural fabric of this great nation.

Personal Growth
One of the most profound aspects of studying abroad was undergoing personal growth. Venturing into a new country alone, with its unique culture, values, and way of life, was enlightening. I recognized that it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I was determined to make the most of it. It allowed me to push my boundaries and attain stronger self-reliance and independence.

Being a central transportation hub, London offered easy access to a plethora of countries, allowing me to experience different cultures, meet new people, and expand my horizons. From the picturesque canals of Amsterdam to the historic landmarks of Rome, traveling during weekends and breaks broadened my perspective and deepened my appreciation for the diversity surrounding us. I can proudly say I traveled to five different countries there. I also gained a greater sense of empathy and open-mindedness, which will undoubtedly serve me well in my future endeavors.

Being in a new environment helped me and my peers step out of our comfort zone and try new things. Kaustubha Medikundam, another friend who studied abroad stated, “ I was able to break out of my shell and found myself exploring new foods, trying new activities, and making new friends. I realized that I was capable of doing things that I never thought I could do, which gave me a sense of confidence and empowerment. I also learned the importance of adaptability and flexibility, as things did not always go according to plan”.

Overall, studying abroad in London was life-changing. The academic experience, cultural immersion, and travel opportunities are just a few highlights. I wholeheartedly encourage everyone to seek unparalleled opportunities to embark on a transformative journey of academic and personal growth. Not only will it broaden your horizons and deepen your understanding of the world around you, but it allows you to forge lifelong connections with individuals from all over the globe.
