Summer Growth: Broadening Your Horizons

Students enjoying UIC on a sunny summer day

Summer has arrived, but that doesn't mean it's time to stop learning and growing. UIC offers a diverse set of opportunities for students to take advantage of to make the most of the summer. From career advising to gaining experience through volunteering, there are opportunities available for everyone to keep the momentum going.

Jean Riordan, Executive Director of UIC Career Services, assists students with academic and professional development, even in the summer. Through individual advising, “experienced staff can help students narrow down career choices and create a workable plan that will help students get to the next step” says Jean. Advisors can help students boost their confidence by preparing for the real world. It is a great time to schedule 1:1 appointments and build new relationships. Many organizations offer internship and pre-professional experiences to students during the Summer. Be sure to connect with colleagues and supervisors on LinkedIn and keep in touch, especially if you think you might want to return to the organization for full time work later on.

Get involved & take initiative! It’s as easy as opening your laptop and visiting Handshake, where students can learn more and apply for summer programs. Make your own appointments with a Career Advisor on Handshake for advice and guidance when going out into the professional world. A productive summer can provide fresh experiences for your resume and expose you to career paths that you may not have considered before.

Volunteering is one of the most rewarding ways to spend your summer. Gaining valuable experience while making a positive impact in your community gives you the best of both worlds. Check out the UIC Service Portal for opportunities in and around the UIC community. From environmental causes to tutoring, the Service Portal has opportunities for everyone. Additional volunteer opportunities are available at UI Health, where students can choose from a variety of different volunteer positions within the UI Health system.

Carmen Garza, Director for UIC Student Employment and Career Readiness, provides student employees and supervisors with the support they need to excel in their careers. Carmen encourages students to “upskill their summer by engaging in meaningful summer experiences that will boost their resume and entice recruiters in the future”. Attending professional development conferences and workshops are also great ways to expand your network and stay on top of industry trends. There are endless opportunities to do something fun, challenging, and exciting for their summer, while also finding ways to showcase transferable skills on their resume.
