Weeks of Welcome is Here!

Weeks of Welcome Event

Welcome to a new semester! We are so happy to have everyone back on campus after a year of remote learning. To get back into the groove of things, we'd like to remind everyone to take part in the activities that will take place during Weeks of Welcome from Aug. 18 to Sept. 12 to kick off the new semester!

I can guarantee that you will have fun and make new memories. Whether you've just transferred, are an incoming freshman, or are a returning student who simply forgot what it is like to engage in on-campus activities, do not worry! I’m here to ease your mind and tell you about my experience during my freshman year.

I became a freshman during the Fall of 2019 and arrived not knowing many people on campus. Not only did I not know many people, but I was also a commuter, which made it more nerve-raking since I did not have the opportunity to get to know people from the dorms beforehand. However, campus events, like Weeks of Welcome, helped me get used to such a big school and to get to know even more people.

The first event I attended was the New Student Convocation, which I honestly loved. After that welcome, there was a cookout on the lawn and I met so many people there who were as equally nervous and excited to start this new chapter in their life. The New Student Convocation on August 22nd may be virtual this year, but do take advantage of it! You never know who you will meet.

The next event I went to was the Cruise with Rex with some friends I had made. This was such a nice experience as we were able to get to know our amazing Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, learn about the architecture along the Chicago River, and of course, indulge in the free food. It was such a nice, relaxing experience that I hope many of you decide to take part in! This year’s event will be held on August 28.

The last event I remember attending was the Involvement Fair. The entire quad is filled with different organizations that students can join. You may feel a little overwhelmed, but it is worth it. It was this event that led me to being a part of the current organizations that I am in. Also, I can’t forget to mention about all the free stuff you can get! This year’s Involvement Fair will be from Aug. 30 to Sept. 3 in a new hybrid format with an in-person fair and a virtual fair.

I had a great time getting used to my new environment and getting to know people during Weeks of Welcome. As we get back into the new normal, I hope you enjoy new experiences this semester and never forget to continue having fun.
